Robo Jet Floss – the way to market
I have been working with cotton candy since 2009 and I’ve seen a lot of devices. Due to the fact that I live in Russia, the first devices were local Twister and Focus. These are the most popular devices produced by the NGO “TverTorgMash”. They occupy more than half of the local market. Reliable, durable, simple and inexpensive devices (about $500). In any amusement park, you will see a lot of Twisters and Focuses. Although initially they were sold only in Russia, I saw these devices in European countries (photo from the park in Latvia).
When I first started my career, equipment from Gold Medal was also very popular. When 35 roubles was given for $ 1, these devices were easy to buy. We all trusted American quality – in general, it was Gold Medal that first began to make similar devices in 1951.
But in 2014, Russia annexed the Crimea and hostilities began in Ukraine. Western countries imposed sanctions, the economy rolled back, the ruble rate fell by half! Now 1 dollar was worth 65 rubles (update: August 2018 – 70 rubles). The fact that yesterday you could buy cheap, now it’s become very expensive for our wallets! We looked with envy at those guys who managed to buy equipment at old prices. However, soon the market massively poured by used Gold Medal devices. The price of the part also rise up, so it became very expensive to maintain this equipment!
One of the vulnerable elements on the Gold Medal devices is a nichrome thread and a ceramic ring. If you are working correctly, this part will last for many years. But if you hire employees without experience, then wait for problems. Sometimes the employee cleans the spinning head of the apparatus with a sharp knife or spoon. Sometimes sugar is very varied or contains tiny metal particles – this leads to a short circuit.
In any case, this part breaks down and you have to buy spare parts for dollars! The average salary in the province in Russia is 20,000 rubles ($ 350) and about the same is worth repairing the device. Therefore, many operators began to sell them.
Back in Russia, I saw a lot of homemade gas appliances. It seems crazy, but people bought them and worked with an open fire! Funny, but as a motor, there was an engine from the wipers of the Soviet car “Moskvich” used!
By the way, you probably will be surprised, but these Soviet cars “Moskvich” were produced in my native city until 2001 (I’m not kidding, check in Wikipedia). These cars were produced in Moscow at “AZLK” and in Izhevsk at “Izh-Auto”. I lived in Izhevsk until I was 29 years old and I remember very well that many of these cars were in our city. 2001 – the 21st century, it’s hard to believe!
As for gas appliances, working with them was dangerous for two reasons. First, it was always necessary to monitor the leakage of propane. This gas has no odor, so it’s easy to explode. At gas stations, another gas is added to the propane, so that when a leak can be felt a pungent smell. Look at these hoses on the photo – from the balloon (near the left hand of a man in a black jacket) to the device there is the gas hose stretches. And at each connection point, there can be a leak of propane.
The second reason, there are three on the spinning head. When rotating, they lift the air up. But if you accidentally hit them with your hand, you can get a serious injury. Most often in this business, students or senior school guys works. It is easy to imagine the consequences of their inattention. In America, I think it will be a lawsuit for thousands of dollars. But in Russia everything is simpler – I worked on these devices by myself and saw many guys (and girls) working too! No data about cut fingers available=)
The advantage of such a device is 100% autonomy. Do not look for electricity and negotiate with the event organizers. You can come without permission or documents – brazenly stand up and occupy a trading place. We called these operators “pirates” because unlike us they worked illegally. Another advantage of such a device is vertical feeding of candy flosses. I’m sure you saw crazy tricks with cotton candy from Dvyd Storm (Candy King). Usually, he works with a homemade electrical device, but it looks like he has a gas cotton candy machine.
